Wreck Cove has been providing clean, renewable energy for Nova Scotians for over 40 years. It's the largest hydro facility in Nova Scotia, powering more than 30,000 homes in Cape Breton with a generating capacity of 212 MW.
Constructed from 1975-1978 south of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Wreck Cove collects drainage water from 216 square kilometres of the Cape Breton Highlands plateau to generate electricity. It’s also one of our more unique generating stations – the station’s powerhouse is located 275 feet underground, down a 620-metre access tunnel.

Hydro Systems like Wreck Cove continue to be an important part of our renewable energy strategy. Wreck Cove infrastructure upgrades and restorations are required to ensure it can continue to provide clean, renewable energy for our customers now and into the future. NS Power has operated the Wreck Cove Generating Station, located in the Cape Breton Highlands, for over 40 years. The facility continues to be an important piece of our clean, renewable energy and requires upgrades to continue to operate. A Life Extension and Modernization (LEM) is currently being implemented to ensure the Wreck Cove Generating Station can continue to operate for years to come. One unit out of the 2 units has been completely refurbished and commissioned, while the second unit is planned to be completed by Q4 2025.
